About Rama,
Dr. Frederick Lenz
Dr. Frederick Lenz, known to his students as Rama, was born on February 9, 1950 in San Diego, California. Dr. Lenz attended the University of Connecticut where he majored in English and minored in Philosophy. While in college, he was inducted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Magna Cum Laude. After winning a highly competitive State of New York Graduate Council Fellowship, he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
In the early 1980s, Dr. Lenz formed the school of American Buddhism, eventually teaching well over 100,000 people Buddhist principles and meditation practices until he passed away on April 12th, 1998. One of the recurrent themes in his teachings was spiritual balance.
Dr. Lenz demonstrated how to balance hard work with play–scuba diving with his students in islands all over the Caribbean, the Fiji Islands, and Hawaii, journeying with his students to Europe, the California deserts and the American Southwest, holding rave dance parties in some of the most elegant settings in Manhattan, including the foyer of the World Financial Center and the Guggenheim Museum. Everyone danced.
